The Great Gallon Discrepancy: US vs Imperial
Why is a British gallon ~20% larger than an American gallon? In 1707, Queen Anne ratified the British Wine Gallon (231 cubic inches), which the United States preserved after 1776. In 1824, however, Great Britain replaced this system with the Imperial Gallon defined as the volume of 10 pounds of distilled water at 62°F (277.42 cubic inches or 4.54609 L). Confusing these two standards causes significant deviations in transatlantic trade and fuel consumption ratings.
